Graduation is one of the biggest achievements in anyone’s life. It is the culmination of one sweet chapter in your life and the beginning of another great chapter where you can write a new adventure. Indeed, COVID-19 has stolen a piece of time and a dream that was sure to become a reality. It is a reality that eventually would have been scripted into an unforgettable memory. A memory that JSU alums and other alums across the globe cherish more now than ever before all because of what you, the Class of 2020, can’t experience at the moment. However, I urge you not to let this new normal overshadow your accomplishments and hard work.
Being in this new normal, in this moment, I’m reminded of these words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.” Now my question to you is, “Where are you standing?” I challenge you to not only stand your ground in this moment, but to run fiercely like the TIGER you are, down a path that you may so ROYALLY carve, that will guide you to your dreams and ensure you live the life you have always imagined without fear!
To the JSU Class of 2020, but especially our students, Kayln Carthledge, D’angelo Fluellen and Johnathon Lewis, on behalf of the JSUNAA DFW Chapter and former JSUNAA DFW President, current JSUNAA SW Region Vice President, Je’Juan Gray, we would like to say,
“Congratulations on achieving what you set out to do! JSUNAA DFW are proud of your accomplishments and officially welcome you into the JSU Alumni Family!”
Lastly, WHEREVER YOU MAY ROAM; always remember “God, Family, JSU!”
With Tiger Pride,
Larry H. Bender, ’06
